We don’t think much about our veins — until they start to bother us, of course! And even once we’re in pain, many of us are still slow to seek treatment from a vein expert like Dr. Surya Challa. Do you think you could benefit from a vein treatment but are not sure where to start?
Luckily, you’re in the right place! Your vein health is our primary focus here at Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa. To get you started on the path to optimal vein health, here’s a look at our most popular vein treatments, along with general treatment guidelines.
For smaller vein concerns:
If you would like to clear away spider veins or broken capillaries, we offer three effective treatments: sclerotherapy, the YAG 1064 laser or BBL photofacial™:
● Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that injects your targeted veins with a special solution, called a sclerosant. This solution disables your concerned veins, eventually causing them to dissolve and fade from view in the weeks and months following treatment. You may need a few sclerotherapy sessions to disable all your concerned veins, but we will help you plan the ideal regimen that meets your exact goals.
● YAG 1064 laser
Without breaking the skin’s surface, laser vein therapy is able to heat and destroy smaller vein concerns on any area of the body without downtime.
●BBL is a non-invasive intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment used to correct tiny capillaries, such as those that appear with rosacea. Typically used for the upper areas of the body including the face and chest, BBL is also a great treatment for reducing redness, blotchy skin tone and pigmentation irregularities, so you can tackle your veins and your skin tone in one efficient treatment!
For larger varicose veins:
If you are suffering from varicose veins, we perform radiofrequency ablation or ambulatory phlebectomy, depending on your needs.
● Radiofrequency ablation disables concerned veins with radiofrequency energy.
During this procedure, which is typically performed under local anesthesia, Dr. Challa uses radiofrequency energy to heat and damage the walls inside of varicose veins. A thin tube (catheter) is placed inside the diseased vein through a small incision. The radiofrequency energy then causes scar tissue to form inside the vein, which closes it off and results in blood flow redirecting to healthy veins. Over time, the body absorbs the varicose vein, causing it to fade from view.
Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa is also proud to offer the most advanced technology for radiofrequency ablation, known as Venefit™ (formerly known as the VNUS Closure™ procedure). This advanced technology offers such benefits as excellent clinical outcomes, less pain and bruising, a reduced risk of side effects, rapid patient recovery and a treatment time of as little as 15 minutes. Dr. Challa may also use mechanico-chemical occlusion, which is a small mechanical device that aids in the collapse of diseased veins.
● Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebotomy (also known as microphlebectomy) for the removal of varicose veins is a safe and effective outpatient procedure at Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is typically completed in as little as 30 minutes or as much as two hours, depending on the amount of diseased vein tissue present. Extensive procedures are scheduled as outpatient procedures using an operating room or surgical center.
Prior to this procedure, board-certified vein specialist, vein doctor and vein surgeon Dr. Surya Challa may employ venous duplex ultrasound technology to access the health of the veins in question. Following the ultrasound portion, the ambulatory phlebotomy is undertaken. This involves small incisions (about 2-3 mm in size) through which a surgical micro-hook removes the varicose vein tissue. Because patients have been numbed with a local anesthesia prior to this minimally invasive surgery, no discomfort is usually experienced.
After the diseased varicose veins have been removed, blood is re-routed to healthier, non-varicose veins. Dr. Challa has performed hundreds of these procedures typically with excellent clinical outcomes, a reduced risk of side effects, high patient satisfaction and minimal post-operative discomfort.
