About Venous Radiofrequency Ablation
For those suffering from venous disease and varicose veins, radiofrequency ablation at Chesapeake Vein Center & Med Spa is a safe, effective and minimally invasive solution.
During this procedure, which is typically performed under local (awake) anesthesia, Dr. Surya Challa utilizes radiofrequency energy to heat and damage the walls inside of varicose veins. A thin tube (catheter) is placed inside the diseased vein through a small incision. The radiofrequency energy then causes scar tissue to form inside the vein, which closes it off and results in blood flow redirecting to healthy veins. Over time, the body absorbs the varicose vein, causing it to fade from view.
Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa is also proud to offer the most advanced technology for radiofrequency ablation, known as Venefit™ (formerly known as the VNUS Closure™ procedure). This advanced technology offers such benefits as excellent clinical outcomes, less pain and bruising, a reduced risk of side effects, rapid patient recovery and a treatment time of as little as 15 minutes. Dr. Challa may also utilize mechanico-chemical occlusion, which is a small mechanical device that aids in the collapse of diseased veins.
Following radiofrequency ablation, our Chesapeake patients are encouraged to walk and return to their daily activities.
FAQ: Radiofrequency Ablation in Chesapeake, VA
What conditions does radiofrequency ablation treat?
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to diminish varicose veins, also known as venous insufficiency and venous disease.
How does this procedure work?
This procedure sends targeted radiofrequency energy into diseased vein tissue, causing it to heat up thereby disabling the walls of the vein, effectively sealing it off and causing it to fade from view. The body then re-absorbs the damaged tissue and blood flow is re-routed to healthier veins. By utilizing advanced and minimally invasive Venefit™ technology, patients enjoy less post-operative discomfort, a reduced risk of side effects and more.
Is this treatment covered by insurance?
Yes. This treatment is typically covered by insurance. To view a list of the insurance providers we accept, please click here.
Is this an outpatient procedure?
Radiofrequency ablation is considered an outpatient procedure because it is performed in-office and patients are encouraged to resume their daily activities following their treatment.
Is this treatment painful?
Because the area is numbed with a local (awake) anesthetic prior to the procedure, patients typically experience no discomfort. Additionally, mild oral sedation and an icing spray on the skin are utilized to enhance patient comfort further.
When can I resume my daily activities?
Patients are encouraged to resume their daily activities, such as walking, as soon as possible to encourage blood flow to re-route to healthier veins.
