If your legs ache, swell, or show bulging veins, the first step toward lasting relief is an accurate diagnosis. At Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa, our dedicated Venous Duplex Ultrasound Lab uses advanced imaging technology to look beneath the surface of your skin and reveal exactly what is happening inside your veins. This safe, painless, and highly detailed test allows us to map your venous system, identify problem areas, and design a personalized treatment plan that targets the true source of your discomfort, not just the visible symptoms.
Your diagnosis is performed under the direct supervision of Dr. Surya Challa, a board-certified surgeon, ABVLM-certified physician, and Registered Phlebology Sonographer (RPhS) with more than two decades of specialized experience in venous disease. Dr. Challa has personally performed over 2,000 venous procedures with an outstanding safety record and no major complications. As a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomate of the American Board of Phlebology, he brings a level of expertise and hands-on involvement that sets our practice apart from medical spas that merely operate under the distant oversight of a medical director.
A venous duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that combines two types of ultrasound: traditional B-mode imaging to visualize the structure of your veins and Doppler ultrasound to evaluate blood flow. Together, these images allow Dr. Challa to assess valve function, detect blood clots, and pinpoint areas of venous reflux that contribute to varicose veins, spider veins, and chronic venous insufficiency.
The procedure uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off your blood vessels to generate real-time images on a monitor. A trained sonographer applies a small amount of warm gel to your leg and gently glides a handheld probe across the skin. There are no needles, no radiation, and no incisions — just clear, immediate data that helps guide your customized treatment plan.
Venous duplex ultrasound is the gold standard for identifying venous disease. It is used to detect varicose veins, venous reflux, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), superficial blood clots, chronic venous insufficiency, and the underlying causes of leg pain, heaviness, swelling, restless legs, and skin changes. The findings often guide treatments such as radiofrequency ablation, ambulatory phlebectomy (microphlebectomy), or sclerotherapy.
The exam is painless for the vast majority of patients, though tender veins may feel slightly sensitive to the probe. It is performed in our comfortable outpatient setting, takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and requires no downtime — you can return to work, errands, or daily activities immediately afterward.
Because venous duplex ultrasound is used to diagnose medically significant symptoms of vein disease, it is typically covered by most major insurance carriers. Our team will gladly verify your benefits before your appointment.
