Heavy, aching legs at the end of the day. Bulging, twisted veins that make you reach for long pants even in summer. Restless legs that keep you tossing at night. If any of this sounds familiar, you are far from alone — and you don’t have to keep living with it.
Radiofrequency ablation at Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa offers a safe, effective, and minimally invasive way to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency, often in as little as 15 minutes, with little downtime and lasting results.
Your treatment is performed by Dr. Surya Challa — a board-certified general surgeon, diplomate of the American Board of Phlebology (ABVLM certified), and Registered Phlebology Sonographer (RPhS). Dr. Challa has personally treated more than 3,000 patients and performed over 2,000 venous disease procedures, and has been recognized in the Guide to America’s Top Surgeons and Strathmore’s Who’s Who Worldwide Honors. As the practicing Medical Director of Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa, he is directly involved in every case — not simply “overseeing” care from afar — and patients throughout Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and the greater Tidewater area trust his hands-on expertise for healthier legs.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure used to treat varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and venous disease. At Chesapeake Vein Center & MedSpa, Dr. Challa uses the advanced Venefit™ system (formerly known as the VNUS Closure™ procedure) — the gold-standard technology for radiofrequency ablation — to deliver excellent clinical outcomes with less pain and bruising, a reduced risk of side effects, and rapid recovery.
After numbing the area with local (awake) anesthesia, Dr. Challa places a thin catheter into the diseased vein through a small incision. Targeted radiofrequency energy heats and damages the vein wall, causing scar tissue to form and sealing the vein closed. Blood flow naturally reroutes to healthier veins, and over time the body absorbs the treated vein so it fades from view. In select cases, Dr. Challa may also use mechanico-chemical occlusion — a small mechanical device that helps collapse diseased veins.
Most patients feel little to no discomfort during radiofrequency ablation. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic prior to treatment, and mild oral sedation and a cooling icing spray are used to keep you comfortable from start to finish.
Radiofrequency ablation is an outpatient procedure performed right in our Chesapeake office. Treatment can take as little as 15 minutes, and patients are encouraged to walk and resume their normal daily activities the same day. Light movement actually helps blood flow reroute to healthy veins, supporting faster, smoother healing.
Yes — radiofrequency ablation is typically covered by insurance when medically necessary. Our team is happy to verify your benefits and review the list of insurance providers we accept.
